Please join us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of DB2 with great educational and enlightened sessions about how it all started, how we overcame barriers and climbed to great achievements. You will also get insights about future directions from our distinguish speakers.
Besides some general sessions, we also have a number of great technical sessions on both DB2 for z/OS and LUW topics. Please take this opportunity to learn and network with your colleagues from the mainframe and non-mainframe world. We have been able to attract some great presenters , so don’t miss this unique event.
We will celebrate together with the GSE DB2 for z/OS Belgium user group.
To make the celebration complete, IBM will give away (by drawing) a FREE CONFERENCE pass for IDUG EMEA 2013 in Barcelona!
Thanks a lot to our sponsors IBM and Triton UK.

About our sessions and speakers:
DB2 LUW 10: Cool Stuff No One Else is Talking About
Iqbal Goralwalla, Triton UK
Beyond the headline features of DB2 10.1 which include Adaptive Compression, Temporal Tables, Zigzag joins and more, there are many new and awesome features in DB2 10.1 that aren’t getting the attention they deserve. In this presentation, I Iqbal lift the hood and reveal the cool stuff you need to know about.
DB2 LUW 10.5 with BLU Acceleration: First Impressions
Iqbal Goralwalla, Triton UK
The IBM BLU Acceleration technology, announced on April 3, 2013, features new innovations from the IBM Research and Development Labs that address the common Big Data issues of size, development time, and response times. This exciting, ground breaking data management innovation for analytic processing is due to be first available in the new DB2 10.5 release for LUW. BLU Acceleration is new technology for analytic queries in DB2 LUW. It introduces columnar capabilities to DB2 databases where table data is stored column-organised rather than row-organised. Its fast, simple to implement and use, low in operating costs, and above all its all embedded in the core DB2 engine. In this presentation, I will expound on this and give my first impressions on DB2 10.5.
DB2 for z/OS, 30 Years of Innovation
Jeff Josten, IBM
DB2 for z/OS celebrates its 30 year anniversary this year! This presentation will take a look at some of the history of DB2 and how it has evolved since its inception 30 years ago. We will also discuss some of the war stories related to the development of the DB2 product in the early days, and test your knowledge of DB2 historical facts!
DB2 10 (briefly ) and Beyond
Jeff Josten, IBM
This presentation will take a brief overview of DB2 10 features and customer experiences. And then we will discuss a high level overview of the next release, DB2 11.
Knowledge : how to get it from YOUR brain into HIS/HER brain?
Marcel den Hartog, CA
Knowledge is more than just a collection of facts. Even stronger : more frequently it seems that the combination of Experience and Knowledge automatically leads to more and better insights. And our “gut feeling” relies heavily on the knowledge accumulated by us. Many IT departments lack a complete generation of employees and thus there is a huge gap in knowledge transfer. How can systems help us to transfer our knowledge to the generations that come after us . And how these systems can help us to make our jobs easier? Marcel will give some “soft” examples of how we should rely more on our gut feelings and how we, in our daily lives, can take advantage of the latest technologies.
DB2 for z/OS & zIIP and zAAP – The REDIRECT to Success
Timm Zimmermann, IBM
With the constant focus on controlling MIPS consumption on today’s mainframe, IT staffs are being pressed to get every cycle possible out of their System z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) specialty engines. DB2 for z/OS can take advantage of these processors. This presentation will cover the basics of the zIIP and zAAP speciality engines and what work is eligible to be off-loaded. Then the presentation will cover in more depth the current DB2 10 for z/OS Release and its usage of the speciality engines.
Recent changes in DB2 for z/OS Logging
Steve Thomas
How well DB2 handles Log data can be a critical factor in maximizing performance, particularly in a high transaction rate environment. There have been a number of changes in the area of Logging over recent DB2 releases. Some of these have been obvious improvements such as the ability to use DFSMS Striping for Active Log datasets, but there have been Logging implications in some other changes such as the introduction of Reordered Row Format. However, many sites I visit have not really investigated these changes in any detail and the impact they might have on their operations. This presentation provides an update on changes to how DB2 manages logging updates and some useful hints and tips you will be able to take away and use to review your logging environment.
Introducing DB2 10 temporal data features.
Peter Vanroose
Temporal data support was introduced in DB2 10. Consequently, application developers and/or DBA’s no longer need to manually implement home-grown solutions for applications requiring temporal features. This presentation will introduce the concepts behind DB2 temporal data support. A number of specific use-cases are discussed, allowing us to present implementation-specific properties, advantages and disadvantages. Both setup and configuration, as well as application development related topics will be treated – and demonstrated. When relevant, a distinction between DB2 z/OS and DB2 UDB LUW implementations will be made.
